Researchers

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) conducts stroke research and clinical trials at its laboratories and clinics at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and through grants to major medical institutions across the country.

Researchers develop new method to identify potential stroke therapies

With an eye toward prevention, NINDS researchers are studying the mechanisms of known stroke risk factors, such as high blood pressure, and searching for harder-to-detect risk factors, such as genetic variations. They’re investigating new ways to restore blood flow after a stroke, the brain damage process, and ways to protect brain cells from the effects of blood deprivation.

New imaging techniques are under development that can determine what parts of the stroke-injured brain are still viable, and what treatments are most likely to be effective. Basic research has also focused on the genetics of stroke and the risk factors. Scientists are working to develop new and better ways to help the brain repair itself to restore important functions. Another area of research focuses on using rehabilitation to stimulate the brain to rewire itself and compensate for functions lost as a result of stroke.
